Tongan Travel

During the Tonga CAFE Program students have a range of travel experiences. Travel to and from Tonga provides a significant number of students with their first international travel experience. Packing for travel itself is a major operation as the team usually travels to Tonga with practical gifts to Tongan communities.

Sydney Airport in late June each year provides the setting for a large group farewell as parents and family come to support their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters as they embark on a journey which for many is a journey of self discovery.

Once in Tonga students use one of the local airlines for the short flight to and from the Ha'apai Islands.

During some visits to Ha'apai students also experience travel by the small boats which provide transport between islands within the reefs.

However as students begin to adjust to island life some embrace the slower pace that is even evident in the most basic of travel: a slow walk within an island village or township.
